Welcome to "Inception Blog", where we dig into into the world of dream manipulation, exploring scientific evidence behind the movie that captivated audiences in 2011.
Dream manipulation, a central theme in the movie, is a concept that has fascinated scientists and researchers for years. The idea of being able to enter someone's dreams and manipulate their thoughts and actions is not as far-fetched as it may seem. Studies have shown that it is possible to influence a person's dreams through various techniques, such as lucid dreaming or hypnosis.
In the movie, characters use a device known as "TOTEM" to enter the dreams and manipulate them to achieve their goals. While we may not have such advanced technology in real life, studies have shown that it is possible to influence dreams through techniques like lucid dreaming and dream incubation.
The scientific aspect is known as lucid dreaming. This is when a person becomes aware that they are dreaming and can sometimes take control of the dream narrative. This parallels the idea of being able to manipulate dreams in the movie. Dream incubation, on the other hand, involves planting a specific idea or scenario in your mind before falling asleep, increasing the chances of dreaming about it.

In Scientific world dreaming is often considered a subjective experience generated by the mind and brain while cut off from the body and the external environments. Sleep may be divided into two phases.Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep is most often associated with vivid dreaming and a high level of brain activity. The other phase of sleep, NREM sleep or slow wave sleep (SWS), is usually associated with reduced neuronal activity; thought content during this state in humans is, unlike dreams, usually nonvisual and consists of ruminative thoughts.
REM sleep, plays a crucial role in the movie's plot, as the characters must navigate through different levels of dreams during this stage of sleep. REM sleep is known for its vivid dreams, and researchers have found that this stage of sleep is essential for cognitive function and memory consolidation. By understanding the science behind REM sleep, we can better appreciate the complexities of the dream world depicted in the movie.
During REM sleep, brain activity increases significantly, resembling that of wakefulness. This is when most dreaming occurs, and the brain processes emotions, memories, and experiences. A unique feature of REM sleep is muscle atonia, a state of temporary paralysis where the brain sends signals to inhibit muscle movement. This prevents individuals from physically acting out their dreams, a phenomenon known as REM sleep behavior disorder when this paralysis is disrupted.
Presleep Suggestion Related to a Phobic Object: Successful Manipulation of Reported Dream Affect
Twenty-four female subjects with a strong dislike of snakes slept for four nonconsecutive nights in the laboratory. They were divided into four groups of six, each group receiving a different presleep suggestion on Nights 3 and 4. On Nights 2, 3, and 4, before sleep, the subjects saw but did not have to touch a live snake and their dreams were collected for each REM period. The results showed that, when compared with the subjects who received the negative affect suggestions, subjects who received positive affect suggestions had significantly higher levels of positive emotions in their dreams, rated their own dreams as more pleasant, and had significantly lower levels of anxiety, sadness, and aggression. These results support the hypothesis that presleep suggestion can be an effective technique in influencing the affective dimension of the dream.

It can be concluded from the above examples that lucid dreaming occurs during the REM sleep cycle. Moreover, the article further supports the theory that watching phobic objects or horror movies may result in affecting the dimensions of the dreams. In a nutshell, we can evaluate that the science of dream manipulation is hidden behind the concepts of REM sleep and lucid dreaming. Understanding this biological aspect will help us take a further step into turning this into reality !
